Where’s the party? There isn’t any apparently, well throw one! Throw a party just because? The answer is yes! In entrepreneurship you must at least celebrate something at some point in time. You can’t or rather you shouldn’t spend all your days just working and all the revenue generated on products and things for the business. That’s insane. We know that in the initial stages of a business there might not be enough to go around but you can treat yourself to lunch at some point. It might not be steak and lobster but there are some nice restaurants that would not need you to break the bank to enjoy a meal. How about buying a nice trinket for yourself to celebrate being a business owner? Don’t you deserve it? Or are you waiting for the next big job in order to celebrate?
Remember what I said about the little things, it was a very humbling experience the first time I treated myself to lunch with monies from the business. In the start-up of almost every business you can’t even pay yourself a salary (or rather not one to shout about) as everything goes back into it. What you do instead is to just let the business pay your personal expenses (bills etc.) and default on the salary, at least initially. So when you get to the point that a lunch (albeit once a month) can be afforded you are not only happy but a little humbled at this luxury.
Practice treating yourself at least once a month from income generated from the business. As I mentioned earlier it might not be The Cliff but there’s always cake! Whatever is your preference just don’t be so conscious about money that you can’t enjoy the fruits of your labour.
Now as simple as this sounds it was not as easy for me in the beginning. There were times I would go to the food court and be saying to myself, “this money can buy materials for the business,” then I would leave the line, buy a chocolate and come home. This went on for at least the first six months of the business. I would always be guilty spending twenty dollars on myself. Can you believe it? Some people spend that every day and there I was, couldn’t even do it once a month.
Those days are long gone, and although I am not going to spend beyond my means I will at treat myself once a month to at least a lunch. I think I deserved it! Celebrate your achievements with the business you have been blessed with. It’s not always about how hard you worked, but also about the joys of your labour. The accomplishments, the fact that although you aren’t where you want to be, you are not where you were! Greater is coming and you are waiting in anticipation. Enjoy being an entrepreneur. Throw the party!
